The long-awaited second volume in the series of Mozart piano concerto recordings by Olga Pasichenko, a fortepianist who has been active internationally while teaching at the conservatories in Amsterdam and Ghent, and Il Gardelino, a group of talented Belgian old-time musicians, is now available. The long-awaited second volume in the series of recordings of Mozart's piano concertos is now available. The two concertos are No. 20, a masterpiece in D minor along with "Requiem" and others, and No. 23, in which a pair of clarinets instead of oboes adds a striking sound, both of them from Mozart's breakthrough period when he was a rare pianist in Vienna and soon found new success with "The Marriage of Figaro". Pasichenko is no longer an "aleatoric" pianist. Pashchenko, who no longer needs to be introduced as a "student of Alexei Lyubimov," has a strong presence at the forefront of the European music scene, and his performance of this work is superbly fresh, with exquisite movements from the bass passage in the opening general part, and a continuous dialogue with the experienced players that draws out the story of each piece.From the breathtaking cantilena in the slow movement to the persuasive Allegro, there is no shortage of things to listen to, including a fantastical and original cadenza in the D minor concerto. The other players also made the most of the subtle nuances and vivid accents unique to the sounds of ancient instruments, and their interpretations clearly showed their consistent attitude of "thinking of these concertos as operas, and recognizing all the instruments as protagonists" (Pasichenko, from the commentary of this disc). The orchestra features world-class wind players such as De Vinne on traverso, Ponserre on oboe, and Bourdos on clarinet. The recording by J.D. Noir, who is also active in the HAYDN 2032 series on the same label, takes into account the subtleties of the ancient instruments.
