Description:
Noskowski studied violin and composition at the Warsaw Conservatory, and then went to the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Friedrich Kiel and Richard Wurst, who were renowned teachers. His three symphonies are regarded as "the first full-scale symphonies by a Polish composer. On this disc, Antoni Vito conducts Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, giving a full-bodied performance of the work that opened a memorable page in the symphonic music of his native country. The Symphony No. 1 is a huge work, lasting about 45 minutes. The style and sound similar to Schumann's and the fugue in the fourth movement show the results of their studies in Berlin. The Second Symphony is about 35 minutes long, but the content is more precise and dramatic, reflecting the composer's feelings toward his native Poland, which was divided between Prussia and Russia at the time. The first movement, which the composer himself described in the program of the premiere as "a stubborn motherland," begins with an introduction followed by a tragic musical development. The second movement, a scherzo, is "Hope and Uprising. The fanfare interspersed with Slavonic dances is impressive.The third movement, "Elegy for fallen heroes," is a pathetic, solemn slow movement. The fourth movement, titled "To the Heavens Beyond the Tribulations," alternates between scenes of progress and setbacks, and ends with a heroic, nationalistic melody that ends on a glorious note. There is also a motif reminiscent of "Dombrowski's Mazurka," which was a symbolic song of the independence movement of the time and later became the Polish national anthem. Noskowski returned to Warsaw the year after completing the second piece, and devoted himself to the training of younger musicians. Although Noskowski was unable to see Poland regain its independence during his lifetime, many musicians, including Szymanowski and Fiterberg, emerged from his ranks and established a tradition of symphonic music in Poland.
