The story is set in the 1960s in a coal-mining town in Yorkshire. After his miner father runs away from home, young Billy lives with his mother and older brother—the three of them together. Billy is surrounded by a violent older brother, a mother who leads a dissolute life and neglects her family, mean classmates, and a teacher who resorts to corporal punishment. One day, Billy comes into possession of a young hawk named “Kestrel” and becomes completely absorbed in raising and training it. The sight of Kestrel, now a fully-grown bird, soaring high in the skies over the Yorkshire countryside brings Billy great joy and confidence, but… The novel *Kestrel for a Knave* by contemporary British author Barry Hines became an instant bestseller upon its publication in 1968 and was adapted into a highly popular film the following year by director Ken Loach. This work, *Kestrel Reimagined (2019)*, features a further revised choreography based on the ballet *Kestrel* (2015), choreographed by up-and-coming choreographer Jonathan Watkins, and was directed and filmed by Ross McGibbon, a master of British ballet film production. Featuring Chester Hayes, who runs a dance club in London; Tobias Batley of Northern Ballet; and Kristen McNally, Principal Character Dancer with The Royal Ballet, among other outstanding dancers, come together to vividly bring the story of Billy and Kes to life through dance, set to the dynamic electronic music of Alex Baranowski.
