"To The Next" is a heartfelt album in which Takashi Ono transforms everything he has accumulated over the years into sound, taking a step toward even greater heights. This is not a retrospective. It is a declaration for the future—half a century of memories, the soul of timeless classics, and a passionate dialogue that transcends generations. It has been half a century since Takashi Ono began his journey as a musician. This album is his way of passing on to the next generation the music that was born, forgotten, and then returned to him over the course of this long journey. That is *ToTheNext*. The title track, “ToTheNext,” was written 24 years ago to celebrate his mother’s 70th birthday. Originally titled “ThreeScoreandTen,” it was given a new title for this album and has become the track that symbolizes the entire collection. Regarding this song—which features bossa nova rhythms and a unique chord progression but had not been performed for a long time—the artist says, “Last year, I happened to find it in a file and tried playing it; I realized this, too, is who I am.” After 24 years, this performance quietly reconnects his past self with his present self. “As Long As There’s Music,” composed by Jules Stein, is a classic film score made famous by Frank Sinatra. While it had traditionally been performed as a jazz waltz, the arrangement was changed to a swing style just before recording, giving the piece a light and dynamic new character. In “The Shadow of Your Smile,” he incorporates the striking beat from Ahmad Jamal’s “Poinciana,” reconstructing the famous melody—which he played countless times in hotel lounges during his youth—with a contemporary sensibility. Bud Powell’s “Un Poco Loco” is a piece that was previously featured on the album *Deep Blue*. This time, the arrangement not only captures the madness and tension inherent in the original but also highlights the beauty lurking beneath, resulting in a deeper, more nuanced interpretation. (1/2)
