Beethoven (1770-1827)
Description:
The 27-year-old Barenboim, who had been an accomplished pianist since the age of 10, began recording Mozart's complete symphonies with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1966, and was also making a name for himself as a conductor. At the Salzburg Festival in 1970, however, Barenboim concentrated all his attention as a pianist on Beethoven's music, performing sonatas from the early, middle, and late periods with great expressive power. From the brisk sound movement in No. 7, to the wide dynamic range and meditative expression of the second movement in "Waldstein," to the heavenly beauty of the "Arietta" in the last sonata, Barenboim's outstanding talent can be fully appreciated.
