[Best Classical 100] Yo-Yo Ma broke new ground with his baroque cello performance with an original instrument ensemble. The orchestra is the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by Copeman, a renowned original instrument ensemble. For this project, Yo-Yo Ma replaced his favorite cello (a 1712 Stradivari) with gut strings, removed the end pins, and made other improvements to make it sound more like the original instrument. The result is an ambitious work that overcame various "difficulties," including a different playing technique and tuning system.
