Description:
A rare stereo recording of "Illusions" from the last years of Mitropoulos' life. Greek master Dimitri Mitropoulos, known as Bernstein's teacher, was revered as a "Greek philosopher. Columbia has numerous recordings of him with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, of which he was music director from 1951 to 1957. This album features "Illusion," recorded in stereo in New York in February 1957, plus "Sea," recorded in mono in 1950. The New York Philharmonic's harsh yet powerful sonority under Mitropoulos' straightforward conducting, devoid of any personal feelings, brings out the symphonic character of the work, which is beautifully captured by Columbia's wide-range ←360 sound→. This is the first reissue of the "Illusion" CD in many years, since it was first released as an import in the very early days of the CD format.
