Brahms and Schumann, performed by the master Zelkin with Ormandy + Philadelphia at the height of his powers. Rudolf Zelkin is best known for his stereo recording of the Brahms piano concertos with Sell and the Cleveland Orchestra in the late 1960s, but this recording with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, made earlier in his early stereo career, is a clear indication that Zelkin was at the height of his powers, perfect in both mind and body. This earlier stereo recording with Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra clearly shows Zelkin at the peak of his powers, both physically and mentally. The simple yet powerful performance, with its determination to get to the heart of the work, leaves an overwhelming impression on the listener. This is a superbly priced disc that couples these two masterpieces by Brahms with three pieces by Schumann, performed with piano and orchestra. The newly written commentary and materials by Mikito Ichikawa are also worth reading.
