The fourth collection of works by Gregor Josef Werner (1693-1766) by the virtuoso group La Festa Musicale is now available. Born in Austria, Gregor Josef Werner (1693-1766), a composer who contributed to the birth of the Viennese Classical School, became the chief musician at the court of the Esterházy family in 1728, a position he held for the rest of his life (after Werner's death, Haydn became the court's music director). Werner is known as a prolific composer, but most of his works are vocal pieces related to church music. This album explores the musical connections between Werner and his teacher Antonio Caldara (1670-1736). Werner composed works using Caldara's madrigals, which show the strong influence of Caldara. Werner's Requiem, recorded last, is dramatic and moving.
