A collection of Stockhausen works performed by Michele Marelli, the renowned clarinetist endorsed by Stockhausen himself! Marelli met Stockhausen at the age of 18 and maintained an artistic relationship with him for over a decade, even premiering several of his works under the composer’s own baton. It is said that Stockhausen strongly encouraged Marelli to focus on the basset horn as well, and this album includes a version of “Light” performed on the basset horn. This is truly a highly anticipated release! “AMOUR (Love)” is a collection of five short pieces based on five poems that Stockhausen wrote for a woman with whom he was involved at the time of composition. The third piece, “Butterflies Are Flying,” depicts two butterflies flying as they chase each other by shifting back and forth between two rhythms and two tempos. It is known as a challenging piece lasting seven minutes, but Marelli’s performance—which even Stockhausen himself acknowledged—is well worth noting. “Harlequin (Little Harlequin = Clown)” is one of Stockhausen’s best-known stage works. The performer must don a costume, execute the dance movements—which are laid out in great detail on the score—and play this challenging piece while entertaining the audience both aurally and visually. Although it is originally a large-scale work lasting over 40 minutes, this recording features only the pantomime section. You won’t want to miss seeing how Marelli portrays the “clown” (since this is a CD, there is no video, but the sounds of his dancing footsteps are clearly captured). *WOCHENKREIS* for basset horn and synthesizer represents Monday—one of the seven days of the week—from the grand opera *Light* (The Seven Days of the Week), which depicts the life of Jesus Christ from his birth to his ascension. Antonio Pérez Abellán, who also enjoyed Stockhausen’s deep trust, takes on the role of the synthesizer, which is assigned the part of the archangel.
