Limited edition.Recorded in Amsterdam, the orchestra's acoustically perfect home, the recording features Haydn, Berlioz, Dvořák, and Stravinsky, all of which are characterized by their classical playing. Colin Davis made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1966 and immediately established a good relationship with the orchestra. Davis gave the orchestra members a lot of freedom while controlling them in a good way, which meant that he was popular. The first recording came eight years later. Beethoven's Violin Concerto (with Arthur Grumiaux) and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique were widely acclaimed for their rhythmic virtuosity and the humble dignity that became a hallmark of Davis' conducting. The Philips recording, especially on his home turf, was marked by warmth and transparency. The artistic and commercial successes that followed continued to shed new light on Haydn's later symphonic works. Davis's empathy is evident in the lilting rhythms, the refined 18th-century phrasing, and the rapture that is always present in his symphonies. Following the "Paris" symphonies (except No. 85), Davis recorded the complete "London" symphonies (Nos. 93-104).The set also includes Davis' 1960 recording of No. 84 with the English Chamber Orchestra at Ouasoleil. This is the first time that Haydn symphony recordings by Davis and the Concertgebouw Orchestra have been released together. His recordings of Dvořák, including the last three symphonies and the Violin Concerto (with Salvatore Accardo) and the Cello Concerto (with Heinrich Schiff), are also highly acclaimed. Throughout his long career, Davis particularly enjoyed bringing out the nostalgic aspects and Czech rhythms of Dvořák's music. His keen approach to Stravinsky is also evident in his recording of three ballets. Although these recordings are popular and have never disappeared from the catalog, listening to them together, one is reminded of the strength of Davis' partnership with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, which is distinctive and remarkable. Haydn's Symphonies Nos. 84, 86, 87, and 88 (Decca) are on CD for the first time, and Dvorak's "Romance" with Salvatore Accardo is a world premiere. In original jacket.Newly remastered. Booklet features archival photos and detailed commentary by Nik Nerissen. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
