Argo & DG Recordings of German Violinists Dedicated to Promoting the Music of Their TimeFleeing the Nazis and settling in London in 1934, German violinist Max Rostal became a regular fixture in the musical circles of this English city and a fine performer of English music. His recordings of sonatas by Elgar, Delius, and Walton with recital partner Colin Horsley were made at Argo studios in the fall of 1954. Rostal's early Argo recording of Busoni's Violin Sonata No. 2 was recognized as the recording that changed the reputation of this long underrated and misunderstood composer. His partner at the time, the Australian pianist Noel Mouton-Wood, made his last recording before his untimely death in 1953. And combined with these recordings was an album for Deutsche Grammophon made in October 1958. Rostal, along with Monica Arth, performs Ravel and the sonatas of Arth's husband, Marcel Mihalovich. Deutsche Grammophon's early stereo sound vividly captures their flawless technique. Universal Music/IMS
