Of the three suites of Respighi's (1879-1936) "Old-Fashioned Dances and Arias for Lute," the third suite, "Siciliano," is the most famous, and everyone has probably heard it at least once. The title of this piece is "for lute," but the original was a piece for lute from the 16th to 17th century, and Respighi arranged it as an orchestral piece, making it an interesting piece filled with various sounds typical of him. The "Birds," also from the 17th century, is a gorgeous orchestral arrangement of the same piece, and is a magnificent work depicting the singing of birds of many colors. These two suites are recorded in SACD quality on this wonderful disc. Naxos Japan
