Otto Klemperer

Description:

A precious document capturing Klemperer’s “youthful” and active period after he turned 80. Mozart and Schumann, presented with a completely new interpretation that “totally rejected” previous values!! Klemperer struggled with health issues throughout his life. Yet in 1968, when he was over 80, he was enjoying an extremely active and fulfilling period. His vitality was so remarkable that it can only be described as “youthful.” His activities extended far beyond performances and recordings, encompassing the mentoring of young artists and his own compositional work. Regarding Schumann, as attested in Hayworth’s *Conversations with Klemperer*, Klemperer made several “additions” to the scores. This applied not only to Schumann but to the German repertoire in general, excluding Brahms; he remarked, “It’s not like Mahler, but there are works that someone must complete.” The intention behind taking on Schumann—and specifically the Second Symphony, often called “Cinderella” among the four—during this period of heightened creative drive becomes clear. In fact, this endeavor was a resounding success, and both the audience and critics embraced the Second Symphony, which had previously been poorly received, with gratitude and deep emotion. The initial review, which had noted, “It is surprising in itself that a rigorous analytical temperament like Klemperer’s coexists so joyfully with Romantic music,” was dramatically transformed into, “A genius has arrived! All the flaws of the four movements have been sublimated into moments of supreme beauty!” A similar paradigm shift was evoked with Mozart as well. Some reviews even described his performance of Symphony No. 38—often perceived as “charming music”—as a “complete rejection” of previous interpretations due to his rigorous approach to the symphonic form. This interpretation even foreshadowed the trend of performances using period instruments that would become wildly popular in the late 1970s. Age, health issues, and the status he had built up over the years—his “aggressive” approach, which disregarded all of these factors, permeated every performance he gave.
