Ilya Gringolts shot to international fame at the age of just 16 when he won the Paganini International Violin Competition. He subsequently made his CD debut with Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (BIS999) and earned high acclaim for recordings such as his collection of unaccompanied violin works (BIS1051), which included Ysaÿe’s Ballades. His repertoire spans from the Baroque to the contemporary, and he performs all over the world. In recent years, he has focused on chamber music, actively performing and recording as part of the Gringolts Quartet. On the BIS label, he has released Glazunov and Taneyev’s string quintets (BISSA2177) featuring Christian Portela, and Schoenberg’s String Quartets (BISSA2267) on the BIS label, featuring Christian Portella. META4 is a Finnish string quartet formed in 2001. With no changes to its original lineup, the quartet has steadily built its career and is now recognized as one of Finland’s leading string quartets. Praised for their flawless ensemble playing and their harmonious musical direction, they have released Bartók’s String Quartets (98036), Haydn’s String Quartets (98587), Shostakovich’s String Quartets (98644), among others, on the German Hensler label. This highly anticipated recording of Mendelssohn and Enescu—made possible by the collaboration of these two top-tier ensembles—is now complete! Mendelssohn’s String Octet was composed when he was 16 years old. Composed for a string-only chamber ensemble with the character of a “little symphony,” it is a deeply captivating work that conveys Mendelssohn’s sincere and straightforward energy. On the other hand, George Enescu was a leading 20th-century Romanian musician who left his mark as both a great violinist and composer. As a composer, he is known for his chamber music works, such as violin sonatas and string quartets. The String Octet included here was composed when he was 19 years old.
