New York Polyphony

Description:

Singing of radiance and rich expressive power. The male vocal quartet New York Polyphony presents seven works on the theme of Passiontide. Hybrid SACD. New York Polyphony was formed in 2006 by Geoffrey Williams, Steven Caldicott Wilson, Christopher Dylan Herbert and Craig Phillips, with a repertoire centred on Renaissance and medieval music. They have released five albums on BIS, beginning with "endBeginning - Polyphony of the Franco-Flemish School" (BIS SA-1949); "Lamentationes" (BIS SA-2407) was named Best Album of 2020 in the Early Music category at the Gramophone Awards and drew high praise from the American magazine Fanfare. "And the sun darkened" is their sixth album, gathering seven works old and new on the theme of Passiontide. Two are by Loyset Compère (c.1445-1518) of Artois in northern France: the motet "Crux triumphans", on a late medieval devotional text, and "Officium de cruce", thought to date from the 1470s, when he was attached to the court of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan (its texts drawn from the Epistle to the Philippians, the Good Friday antiphons and the fourteenth-century hymn "Patris sapientia"). There is the motet "Tu pauperum refugium" by Josquin des Prez (c.1450/1455-1521); "Psalm 55" by Andrew Smith (b.1970), English-born and based in Norway, an a cappella reworking for male quartet of music commissioned for the theatre piece "Notes for a Requiem" at the Vestfold Festival; "Pater noster - Ave Maria" by the Flemish composer Adrian Willaert (c.1490-1562), which also quotes plainchant melodies; and "Psalm 22" by the Estonian composer and choral conductor Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962). "O salutaris hostia" by Pierre de la Rue (c.1452-1518) is a radiant setting built on St Thomas Aquinas's hymn "Verbum supernum prodiens". King International
