This is a live recording of Lionel Hampton's 1953 European tour with his big band featuring Clifford Brown, Quincy Jones, Art Farmer, Gigi Grice, and others, in Basel, Switzerland. This is literally a historic recording. Clifford, Farmer, and Quincy, who are now brilliant in jazz history, were still unknown in the world at that time, and Hampton, the boss of the band, was a world-famous jazz star, so most of the solos were done by the boss. Who was the trumpet soloist who followed the boss's solo in the groove number "Flying Home," swimming on a high note? You can see the venue exploding with excitement. The arrangement as a whole is modern and intelligent in its details. The Latin touch in the arrangement of "Summertime" is a nice touch. The ensemble is really tight and exciting.
