The allure of the modern harpsichord on full display. Bach on a Walcha—the pinnacle of this instrument. The German master Helmut Walcha (1907–1991). While his recordings of Bach’s organ works have been deified, not all of his harpsichord performances are readily available. In today’s era, when original harpsichords reign supreme, it’s possible that the modern harpsichord by Ammer—the one Walcha used—is viewed as unconventional and even shunned. However, as the saying goes, “good money drives out bad,” and now that opportunities to hear performances on modern harpsichords have become almost nonexistent, recordings by a giant of Walcha’s caliber are truly precious. This release includes four works that are particularly difficult to find on CD. The infamous Ammer harpsichord has had the harshness characteristic of this instrument removed, resulting in a crisp, pure tone reminiscent of a music box. While this purity and lack of power are sometimes criticized, it is by no means a flaw; in fact, it’s ideal for appreciating the harpsichord’s timbre. In that sense, this album dispels prejudices against the modern harpsichord and allows listeners to rediscover its charm. Valhya’s performance is noble and sublime. The brilliance of the Italian Concerto and the spine-chilling intensity of the Chromatic Fantasy can only be described as masterful. It proves that a Bach performance from 50 years ago is by no means lacking in charm when compared to today’s recordings. King International
