Randy Brecker joins as a guest! The first live recording of veteran jazz pianist Bill O'Connell's first career showcases O'Connell's newfound appeal in an exuberant and superb evening. Records. Bill O'Connell, a jazz pianist from New York City, is a talented artist who has been at the forefront of jazz for many years and is also known as a soloist and bandleader in Latin jazz big bands. As a player, O'Connell's lyrical approach draws inspiration from Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, and Herbie Hancock. O'Connell was born in New York City in 1953, grew up in the Port Washington suburb of Long Island, and studied classical piano at Oberlin College in Ohio after high school. He returned to New York City in the early 1970s and made a name for himself as a sideman, performing with the likes of Sonny Rollins and Chet Baker.Montauk, the easternmost point of Long Island where this recording was made, was once known as an idyllic place of lotus and poppies, but is now a well-known tourist destination that has become a summer tradition in the Hamptons. This recording was produced against the backdrop of such coastal charm and scenery of Montauk. This is the first live band performance in O'Connell's long discography, and the session at the Hamptons Jazz Fest is included as a live recording. The band was joined by top-notch artists including saxophonist Craig Handy, bassist Santi Debriano, and trumpeter Randy Brecker, who was joined by the audience with great enthusiasm. O'Connell's first session with drum icon Billy Hart highlighted the charm of the event.
