Description:
The beautifully haunting choral music of jazz, black music, atonal music of the New Viennese School, and the music of Jewish composers were considered "degenerate music" and persecuted by the Nazi regime in the 1930's. In 1938, an exhibition of degenerate music was held in Dusseldorf, and these "degenerate music" were strongly suppressed. The Nazi regime also persecuted Jewish composers in the 1930s for their "degenerate" music, and many of them were forced to flee to exile or were sent to concentration camps where they lost their lives. This album is a collection of music stigmatized as "decadent music," arranged mainly for chorus and sung powerfully and beautifully. Beginning with Mahler's "Original Light" and continuing with works by various composers, the program culminating in "Adagietto" (also in an unaccompanied choral version) is heartbreaking to listen to, as if the music that has been unfairly criticized is being purified and ascending to heaven. The exquisite chorus of the Flemish Radio Chorus is superb. King International
