A digitally remastered recording with excellent balance. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and *Songs of the Night*, performed by Mahler specialist Haitink. Among Haitink’s Mahler recordings, there are currently six different versions of each of these two works (including live and video recordings), but this collection brings together the first digital recordings Haitink made of them in the 1980s. Given the number of recordings of each piece, it’s clear that Haitink considers these two works to be his forte—which is a testament to the excellence of his interpretations. Furthermore, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, with its long tradition of performing Mahler, complements his vision perfectly; the rich expressiveness of Symphony No. 4, enhanced by the quality of the digital recording, results in an outstanding performance.
