How must Liszt (1811–1886), her father, have felt when he learned that his daughter Kojima was to marry the infamous Wagner? Given that he himself had engaged in a series of passionate romances, he must have had many thoughts on the matter. That same father-in-law, Liszt, arranged many of his “son’s” works for solo piano. There is no doubt that Wagner’s operas—which depicted the friction between men and women in full detail with their rich, profound tones—captured Liszt’s interest both in terms of content and music. The piano version of *The Theatre of Love* featured here, while compact in sound, faithfully captures the world Wagner sought to portray. Of course, mastering these pieces is no easy feat—it’s far beyond the reach of the average pianist. After such a suffocatingly intense confrontation, listening to Weber can be summed up in a single word: “joyful.” Naxos Japan
