Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
The Naxos trio for the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth is a complete version of the ballet music with many charming little pieces, based on the recording of the first performance in 1930, with "Tea for Two (Tahiti Trot)" inserted at the beginning of the third act. This performance is a vivid portrayal by a conductor who specializes in Ives and 20th century Russian (Soviet) music. The three complete ballets Shostakovich composed between 1925 and 1935 stop at the most obscure of his works. The Golden Age depicts the heroic competition of a Soviet soccer team visiting a Western city (U-town in the play) during an industrial fair, and the fallout over the discomforts they constantly suffer from hostile administrators, decadent artists, and corrupt bureaucrats.Shostakovich had already prepared a suite including his famous "Polka" before the ballet's premiere, but the dissonant and intricate bass progressions heard throughout the ballet are less apparent. This recording is the first to fully implement the repeat designation, making it easier for the listener to appreciate the frenetic and sometimes anarchic intensity inherent in this ballet.
