Furtwängler Finally Arrives on NAXOS! "Symphony No. 6" and "Tristan und Isolde"—"Prelude and Liebestod" with the Berlin Philharmonic The paradox of Furtwängler’s art lay in the fact that, while he was a master at revealing the structure of a work, his performances simultaneously possessed an air of spontaneity—as if they had just been born in the moment. Throughout his life, Furtwängler earned a reputation as “the most profound and satisfying conductor of Wagner among all conductors.” In his recording of the “Prelude and Liebestod” from *Tristan und Isolde*, a tense, dramatic atmosphere is created and resolved within this piece, which lasts less than 20 minutes. Few performances can match this one, and none surpass it. Along with Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique,” which begins with a poignant performance, these two landmark recordings—which shine brightly in the history of recorded music—are now being released as a new reissue CD set. Producer’s Notes by Mark Obert-Thorne For this reissue, we selected the discs and sides in the best condition from four sets of pre-war American Victor “Gold Label” SPs and one set of British HMVs for *Pathétique*, and from four sets of American Victor “Gold” SPs and one set of French Disque Gramophone for *Prelude and Love’s Death*. Some scratches originate from the master recordings themselves; we decided to leave them as is, removing only those that were particularly noticeable.
