Originally famous for its distinctive on-mic recording, the XRCD version has been made much more vivid and realizes an unprecedented sound image, with Szigeti's martial violin looming with an overwhelming presence that is almost frightening. The liner notes include an 18-page commentary by Kazunobu Yasuda (common to both I and II), which provides a complete picture of the violin sonatas along with the flow of Mozart's life. The performance of K. 379 is tremendous. The profound adagio is a song of honest earnestness. Then, after the Allegro, the passionate G minor!
