The 75th anniversary of the Bayerisches Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra and the 95th anniversary of Haitink's birth. The first CD release of the profound Shostakovich No. 8! The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2024 with a rare first release from its archives. Haitink, who is 20 years older than Oke, made his first appearance with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in 1958, and they continued to work together for a very long time. Here is a live performance of Shostakovich's 8th Symphony in September 2006. Haitink's repertoire is wide, but Shostakovich was a special composer, and he was the first Western conductor to complete a recording of all of Shostakovich's symphonies (Decca), revealing his true value as a symphonic writer with a multilayered and multifaceted expression similar to Mahler's. The 8th Symphony is one of his most popular symphonies, and was performed regularly in concert, but the performance of the 8th Symphony is a highlight of his career. Among them, the Eighth seems to have been regularly performed in concert, but the only CD available is the one with the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1982, which is included in the above-mentioned complete works.The performance time per movement of this disc is 26:08/6:39/6:59/9:09/15:52 (total 64:47), which is a little longer than the Concertgebouw disc of 26:02/6:16/5:58/8:49/14:49 (total 61:54) in the second movement and later movements in general. Although many live recordings of Haitink's music have been released on CD in recent years, there are very few recordings of different performances of the same piece by Shostakovich, so it is very significant to be able to hear his interpretation 24 years after the Concertgebouw recording.
