The Compatibility of Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” with Chorus and Haydn’s Church Music-Style Symphony Le Concert de la Loge is one of the most dynamic early-music orchestras at the forefront of the French music scene, particularly highly regarded for its interpretations of works from the Classical period onward. What we hear here is Pergolesi’s masterpiece *Stabat Mater*—a work with many competing interpretations… or so one might think, but the lineup also features the French Boys’ and Girls’ Choir, whose presence has been growing in recent years. Although the music itself is identical to the standard two-soloist version, this recording uses the choral version published in Paris in 1769. Throughout the piece, the chorus adds depth to the sound and provides exquisite accents, creating a wonderful effect right from the opening. Even after the Neapolitan composer Pergolesi’s untimely death in 1736, his *Stabat Mater* continued to be cherished as the masterpiece of his life. Particularly in Paris, where the number of Italian music enthusiasts was growing, it was regularly performed as a staple of the *Concert* spirituels, where it was repeatedly performed with varying instrumentations. Conductor Chovan, bringing with him an original Guadagnini violin from 1780, leads the orchestra as concertmaster, effectively orchestrating a dynamic musical performance by creating a rich interplay between the ensemble of about 20 musicians and a choir of approximately 40, complemented by the beautiful voices of the talented Devos and Charvet. Even more intriguing is the inclusion in the second half of the album of Haydn’s Symphony No. 49, “The Passion,” composed the year before the score in question was published in Paris, in which Haydn made full use of traditional church music conventions (with the organ introduced as the continuo instrument, given the nature of the work). Combined with the exquisite artistry of the performance, the two works flow together with surprising naturalness, vividly evoking the atmosphere of late 18th-century Paris, when these compositions enjoyed great popularity. The commentary by Julien Dubruc and Chauvin of the Versailles Baroque Music Center, based on historical performance practice, is also highly insightful.
