From the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino comes *Rinaldo*, directed by Pizzi in a unique production that captures the essence of Handel’s opera! In 11th-century Jerusalem, Rinaldo, a Crusader warrior, is deeply in love with Almirena, the daughter of Commander-in-Chief Goffredo. Goffredo has promised Rinaldo that “he will allow the two to marry once Jerusalem has fallen.” Upon learning of this, Armida—the witch and lover of Argante, King of Jerusalem—seeks to sap Rinaldo’s fighting spirit. First, she kidnaps Almira, and then succeeds in capturing Rinaldo himself as he sets out to rescue her. However, the situation becomes increasingly complicated as Argante falls in love with Almirena, and Armida, in turn, feels a strong attraction to Rinaldo… *Rinaldo* is a serious opera (opera seria) composed in 1710 by Handel, who had traveled to London, at the recommendation of Aaron Hill, the manager of the Haymarket Theatre. Handel completed this opera in just two weeks, and it premiered at the same theater on February 14, 1711, to great acclaim. The libretto is based on Tasso’s epic poem *Jerusalem Delivered*, and it is well known that many composers of the time wrote works based on the same story. One of the most famous pieces in this opera, “Let Me Weep,” is an aria in which the captive Almirena swears her fidelity to Rinaldo in the face of Argante’s advances. This production was recorded at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in September 2020, which was the first venue in Italy to resume performances following the lifting of the COVID-19 lockdown. Directed by Pizzi—a leading figure in the world of opera direction who celebrated his 90th birthday that same year—the production features a beautiful, fantastical stage design that makes extensive use of indirect lighting and billowing fabric, against which characters in magnificent costumes move about in palanquins pushed by stagehands. First conceived for a 1985 production at the Reggio Emilia Municipal Theater, this staging remains a unique and timeless creation. From Pei, whose resonant, beautiful voice carries the title role, to Carmela Remigio’s Armida—whose commanding characterization is truly remarkable—along with a cast of singers highly skilled in Baroque vocal technique and Sardelli’s precise conducting of the orchestra, the production fully conveys the essence of Handel’s opera.
