Description:
Fernand, a monk's apprentice, falls in love with a woman (Leonor) who comes to the church to pray. However, she is the mistress of the king of the time, Alphonse XI. Even though he is banished from the monastery, Fernand cannot give up his love for her. Unaware of her status, Fernand goes to see her in person and tells her how he really feels, but she rejects him outright. In order to win Leonor's love, Fernand takes a series of actions... Donizetti's opera "Favorito" (Favourite), which vividly depicts the loves and hates of real people in 14th century Castile, was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1840, and was later translated into Italian. The key to the story is the young monk Fernand, who is tossed about by an unforgivable love, and the performance leaves a strong impression with the wonderful acting ability of the Spanish-born tenor Celso Albero, the emotionally rich singing of Simeoni as Leonor, and Olivieri as King Alphonse, who maintains his dignity despite his troubles with love.
