The Prestigious Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and Hofstetter Present A Vibrant Performance of Handel Founded in 1945 by Karl Münchinger—renowned as a pioneer of Baroque music—the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015. The ensemble was an early pioneer in establishing the now-common practice of performing Baroque music—such as Vivaldi’s *The Four Seasons* and Bach’s orchestral suites—with a small ensemble. While the ensemble eventually expanded its repertoire to include the Viennese Classical period, in recent years it has ventured into works by Glass and Kancheli, and is recognized as one of the world’s leading elite chamber orchestras. Since 2006, Michael Hofstätter—a prominent figure in the contemporary early music scene—has served as the orchestra’s principal conductor. This album features four pieces from Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6—a collection of twelve works—as well as the “Concerto Grosso ‘The Banquet of Alexander’,” which was originally performed between acts of the oratorio of the same name but is now more widely recognized as a concerto grosso in its own right. Handel left behind two collections of concertos, Op. 3 and Op. 6, but it is Op. 6 that is most frequently performed. Composed in a single burst over the course of just one month, this work offers a powerful and lively musical flow, dramatic shifts, and rich, nuanced passages characteristic of Handel.
