I have never heard "Bolero" like this! Lotto and Les Siecle, more shocking and awesome than expected. The biggest new album of the year! Finally, "Bolero" by Lotto & Les Siecle has been realized! After the excellence of the last four Ravel albums, everyone was expecting what "Bolero" would be like, and in fact, there were many requests for it. Lhoto himself had said that he would definitely record "Bolero" as soon as he had all the instruments, and this time he was finally able to record it. The performance far exceeded my expectations, and I was glued to the piano for 15 minutes from the very beginning. The fact that the rhythm is played not by a snare drum but by a tambour (Provencal drum) and the period instrument's tone and non-vibrato technique are a bit disconcerting for a moment, but they immediately change your preconceived notions and draw you in. The changing timbres of the instruments are different from what we know, which is refreshing, and the quality of the Harmonia Mundi recording conveys each nuance exquisitely. Lotto strictly adheres to the tempo, slowly building to a crescendo that is not monotonous, but rather highlights a good sense of rhythm. The fact that the soloists are allowed to play with each other's solos is what makes the piece feel democratic. The music is the ultimate in Ravel's craftsmanship of artificial beauty, but it also shows a sensuality that can even be described as emotional. Most of the instruments are from the time of the first performance of Bolero, and the small-diameter trombone, which sounds like a trumpet, is the same as the one used in the first performance.The unique bright tones of the gut-string Erard harp and even the Müstel celesta are captivating. The castanets, which were later removed, appear in the second half of the piece, thanks to a new critical edition of the score. The album is so vivid that many masterpieces are lost in the shadows. The main part of the album is the opera "A Time in Spain. For Lotto and Les Siecle, the difference between opera and orchestral genres is not important, but Ravel's origins, attachment to Spain, and unreality in both works are explored. A Time in Spain" is a 50-minute one-act comedy about a Spanish woman's infidelity. The sarrusophone part, usually substituted for the contrabassoon, is played as in the original to unique effect. The singers also give good performances, and the grand quintuple chorus with habanera rhythms is a masterpiece. King International
