Michel-Richard de Lalande (Paris, 1657 - Versailles, June 18, 1726) was a French Baroque composer and organist at the French court. He was a contemporary of Jean-Baptiste Lully and François Couperin as a musician at the court of the Sun King. He served as music teacher to the princesses of Louis XIV and was music director of the royal chapel from 1714 until his death. Although he is best known for his ballet music and court music, especially his "Sansfonie pour la royale," his majestic grand motets are also important works. from the 17th to the 18th century, a genre of religious music known as the grand motet (large motet) developed in France during the Baroque period. These were a type of church cantata consisting of solo voice, chorus, and orchestra, performed in place of the so-called mass music during the masses at the court of Louis XIV and others.The lyrics are mainly taken from the Old Testament psalms, and the rich and varied content of the psalms is composed into dramatic music, much like an opera. At the French court, the sub-master of the chapel was the actual head of church music, and was responsible for the composition and performance of the grand motets. De Lalande is said to be the perfectionist of the grand motet. The expressive and beautiful melody, colorful orchestration, natural harmony, and clear rhythms are the characteristics of this piece.
