Description:
Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), whose bicentennial will be celebrated in 2019, was a composer born in Cologne, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, and worked in France. Undoubtedly the most important composer of French operettas, he wrote nearly 100 operettas and had a decisive influence on the musicals of today. Offenbach learned to play the cello as a child under the tutelage of his father and entered the Paris Conservatory. After graduating, he became a cellist in an orchestra, and was so virtuoso that he was known in the salons of high society as "the cellist of the cello," and composed many cello works that are rarely performed today. In 1850, he became the conductor of the Théâtre français, and in 1855, he became the conductor of his own theater, the Théâtre de la Villefranche. Later, in 1855, he founded his own theater, the Boeuf-Parisien, where he performed operettas, which became very popular. His operetta "Orphée de l'inferno" premiered on October 21, 1958, and was a smash hit, running for 228 consecutive performances through June of the following year. Rossini described it as "Mozart on the Champs-Elysées" and is also called "the father of operetta" in modern times. Although he died without completing "The Tales of Hoffmann," his masterpiece in his later years, this opera is a masterpiece with a fantastic story, rich music, entertainment, and artistry.This box contains Offenbach's most famous operettas, both French and German sung versions of the complete works, rare operettas, songs, and more to enjoy Offenbach's lively and beautifully melodic music.
