Description:
MacLeish's restoration of a Lutheran Christmas service from circa 1620As per the 1569 Wolfenbüttel Service Formula, this is a restoration of a Christmas morning service as it would have been held in a major Lutheran church in central Germany circa 1620. In addition to the music included in Praetorius' work, some of the music is by Zamuel Scheidt (1587-1654) and Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630). At Mass, many of the songs are sung in German, and a few are sung in Latin. Unlike the monastic Mass of "Christmas in Rome," the Mass at that time was celebrated with congregational participation. MacLeish chose Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark as the recording location, and the actual congregation participated in the recording. The congregational singing brings a remarkable uplifting feeling and leads the listener into a wonderful world of music that praises God and Christ, even if the words are not understood.
