Description:
Introducing a Mendelssohn album by French pianist Philippe Cassard, born in Besançon in 1962. While Sony Classical has already released Natalie Dessay’s *Schubert: Lieder*, this album marks Cassard’s solo debut on the Sony Classical label. Cassard earned high acclaim in the piano and chamber music departments at the Paris Conservatory; he subsequently studied under Nikita Magaloff and others, was a finalist in the Clara Haskil Piano Competition, and won first prize at the Dublin International Competition in 1988. Since giving a recital in Paris with Christa Ludwig in 1985, he has gained worldwide renown as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. When one thinks of Cassar, the name Debussy—whose complete works he has performed all over the world—may inevitably come to mind first; however, he also has a distinct voice as a Schubert interpreter in France and is highly regarded for his interpretations of the German Romantic repertoire. His masterful performance of Mendelssohn’s masterpiece, characterized by an intellectual texture and a subdued, refined touch, is uniquely his own; it stems from his thorough study of the instrument’s tonal characteristics, which allows him to offer a freely interpreted rendition. The album is further enriched by the inclusion of Liszt’s arrangement of “Sunday Song,” a piece by Fanny Mendelssohn, and “Song of the Night” sung by Natalie Dessay. Sony Music
