Description:
While she delivers majestic performances of J.S. Bach’s works—including the “Goldberg Variations”—pianist Simone Dinerstein has also expressed her unique artistic vision through a crossover album in collaboration with singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, thereby gaining a new following. Simone Dinerstein’s latest album is yet another surprising release: a collection of piano concertos by Gershwin, Ravel, and Lasser, performed with the Leipzig MDR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christian Järvi. The concept behind this album is to explore the commonalities and influences between the music of France and the United States—two nations separated by the Atlantic Ocean. Gershwin actually visited Paris in the 1920s and captured his impressions of the country in his music. Moreover, “Rhapsody in Blue” and Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major” share many common elements, particularly in their rhythms. The album title, “Broadway-Lafayette,” refers to the Broadway-Lafayette station on the New York City Subway, as shown in the cover photo; however, since the station’s name also derives from General Lafayette—a French general who played a prominent role in the American Revolutionary War—it serves as a symbol of the historical connection between the United States and France, thereby embodying the album’s concept. Philippe Lasser is a composer based in the United States with a French mother and an American father, and he has been a close friend of Dinerstein for many years. Dinerstein also performed Lasser’s “12 Variations on a Theme by Bach” at the 2008 Berlin concert released by Telarc. This piano concerto was written for Dinerstein in 2012. True to Lasser’s stated “admiration for Bach,” it is a pure and beautiful work that incorporates quotations from Bach’s chorales. This album offers a sincere portrayal not only of Dinerstein as she is today but also of contemporary American music. Sony Music
