Superhuman Wispelway ONYX Vol. 3! Britten's epic "Cello Symphony" is here! Peter Whispelway, a cello extraordinaire, showed his overwhelming presence at La Folle Journée au Japon from late April to early May (2010). The third release on the Onyx label features Britten's epic "Cello Symphony," a work that holds a special place in Whispelway's repertoire! Like Prokofiev's "Symphonic Concerto" and Shostakovich's "Cello Concerto No. 2," Britten's "Cello Symphony" was composed for Rostropovich, who performed the world premiere in 1964. This work is not in the three-movement form often seen in concertos, but in the "four-movement form" with the fourth movement being a passacaglia.It is also known as a difficult piece with a special characteristic that differs from the usual concerto in that the cello and orchestra play the music on equal footing, rather than "cello solo and orchestra accompaniment. During his time with Channel Classics, Whisperway recorded Britten's "Complete Unaccompanied Cello Suites" (CCSSA 17102) and "Cello Sonatas, Op. 65" (CCSSA 20003), as well as the "Complete Unaccompanied Cello Suites" (GLO 5074) for Globe in the Netherlands. For Whispelway, the music of Britten is as special as that of J.S. Bach! Since Whispelway himself has shown great confidence in the perfection of this "Cello Symphony", there is a possibility that his performance will reign as "the masterpiece of the 21st century" following Rostropovich's "the masterpiece of the 20th century".
