Description:
The genius Markevich was good at "Fantasie", but there are surprisingly few recordings of this piece. In this disc, he uses an intense method of expression in some parts, such as in the "Pathétique," where he stops even the flow of the music to explain the emphasis to the audience in a presentational manner. This kind of radical musicality made him too demanding to be a permanent member of a single orchestra, and it is said that it determined his life as a guest conductor in various parts of the world. Like Celibidacke and Wandt, this is probably the reason why he was so well suited to broadcast orchestras, which can afford to be relatively easy to manage (i.e., have plenty of time for rehearsals).
