Variations on a Theme by a Contemporary Composer by Lutoslawski's Close Friend, Panufnik Born in Poland, Andrzej Panufnik spent the second half of his half-century life in England. Not only was he a composer closely associated with the London Symphony Orchestra, but he is also known for his special celebration of greatness through the LSO Panufnik Scheme, in which six promising young composers are selected each year to present their works with the cooperation of Kamila's widow. The second of these is an intriguing work by 10 contemporary British composers on variations on the theme of Panufnik's 1968-9 "Cosmic Prayer" for four solo singers, chorus, three harps, and organ.Composer Colin Matthews, known for adding "Pluto" to Holst's "The Planets," led the group, Max de Wardner, Eavis Samutis, Christopher Mayo, Toby Young, Elizabeth Winters, Larry Goves and Raymond Yu, Anjula Semans, and Edmundo Finis co-wrote the variations. François-Xavier Roth, who endorsed the purpose of this project and took over from the first, will conduct the orchestra.
