Sally Beemish, the popular British composer and violist! An album of her own compositions, performed by herself, celebrating her 70th birthday in 2026 alongside friends and family! Produced to commemorate Sally Beames’ 70th birthday, this album is an intensely personal viola collection that combines her own recent works with new pieces commissioned from her three children and close friends. Memories of her childhood home, motherhood, her collaboration with her husband Peter Thomson (playwright and stage actor), and new works gifted by her children are all expressed through the diverse expressions of the viola. Particularly symbolic is the fact that a viola crafted by her daughter Stephanie in 2014 prompted her return to performing after a long hiatus (she uses the instrument made by Stephanie on this album as well). This album warmly weaves together themes of family, friendship, loss, and renewal within an intimate ensemble centered around the viola. Sally Bimmish, born in London in 1956, is a leading British composer and violist. She began her career as a violist with ensembles such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, but after her loaned instrument was stolen in 1989, she stepped away from performing and made a full transition to composition in Scotland. She has established an international reputation through a wide range of works, including concertos, chamber music, and ballet scores. Inspired by a viola crafted by her daughter Stephanie, she returned to performing in 2015—her first time in about 20 years—and is currently exploring music with greater depth as both a composer and violist.
