A Tragedy Immediately After the War: The Successor to Furtwängler, Who Fell to a Bullet A Rare Collection of Borchardt’s Recordings Leo Borchardt (1899–1945) was the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic’s first postwar concert, held at the Titania-Palast on May 26, 1945. The program included works by Mendelssohn, which had been banned by the Nazis. With Furtwängler in exile, Borchardt was provisionally appointed principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic in June 1945. Born in Moscow in 1899, Borchardt came to Berlin in 1920 to study under Scherchen. While working as a chorus master at the opera house and as Klemperer’s assistant at Unter den Linden, he also conducted the radio orchestra. He made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic on January 3, 1933, with a program featuring Haydn, Beethoven, and Brahms. From 1934 to 1937, he frequently appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic in “Masterpiece” concerts. However, from the mid-1930s onward, he often performed abroad for political reasons. This collection brings together rare recordings from “Masterpiece” concerts of the early 1930s. It is a valuable collection for gaining insight into the sound of the Berlin Philharmonic at that time and the virtuosity of Borchardt, whose career was shaped by the tumultuous events of history.
