Fretwork is the world's premier viol consort, founded in 1986 by renowned viola da gamba players such as Asako Morikawa and Richard Boothby, and celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2021. The album features the Flat Consort of Matthew Locke, an English composer born about 400 years ago. He is known as the first English composer to compose an opera, and is also known as the composer who influenced Henry Purcell since he was a boy. For these reasons, he is considered one of the most important composers of the English Baroque period, but his works are not often collected together.Listening to the newly recorded fretwork and the performance with David Miller and Silas Walston on bass continuo, you will be enriched by the realization of the excellence of Matthew Locke's work.
