Featuring Naomi Sato, a shō player based in the Netherlands! A mystical project that translates the harmony of the universe (the "Music of the Spheres") into sound! The shō and a ensemble of string instruments depict the orbit of Venus, "Aphrodite," and the phases of the moon, "Selene"! This album features two works centered on Venus and the Moon from the series *Cosmoscopio*, a project Dutch composer Richard Reinforth has been working on since 2021, based on the ancient Greek philosophical concept of “Musica Universalis.” "Aphrodite," which represents Venus, is a work for the shō—a traditional Japanese instrument—and string sextet. It is composed of 13 orbits based on the "pentagram of Venus"—the orbit Venus traces as seen from Earth—and 15 sections depicting its approach and retreat. Meanwhile, "Selene," which represents the Moon, is a work for string quartet. The process of the moon’s phases—changing from a new moon to a half moon, then to a bright full moon, and finally returning to a new moon—is sonically depicted through the intricate interweaving of passages played by each instrument. The performance is by the Ives Ensemble, a prestigious Dutch ensemble specializing in 20th- and 21st-century conductor-less chamber music. Joined by Naomi Sato, a shō player based in Amsterdam and Japan who performs globally, the recording—made with TRPTK’s ultra-high-resolution technology (PCM 352.8 kHz, 32-bit), which offers what could be called the ultimate spatial expression—masterfully captures the mysterious and crystalline resonance of the celestial bodies.
