This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Mingus, the greatest jazz musician of all time. Not only known as one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers of all time, but also a giant of jazz bass, Mingus Three, a unique piano trio album featuring the popular West Coast pianist Hampton Hawes, has been reissued in a deluxe edition to commemorate the 65th anniversary of its release. The Mingus Three" has been revived in a deluxe edition featuring previously unreleased recordings to commemorate its 65th anniversary.On July 9, 1957, Charles Mingus recorded a trio with pianist Hampton Hawes, who was a childhood friend and played in the bands of Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon, and drummer Danny Richmond, who would go on to play with Mingus for over 20 years. Mingus Three" was recorded on July 9, 1957. The deluxe edition of "Mingus Three" includes four standard numbers ("Yesterdays," "I Can't Get Started," "Summertime," and "Laura") and two original Mingus songs ("Back Home CD1 contains the original album, consisting of two Mingus originals ("Back Home" and "Dizzy Moods") and a group jam number, "Hamp's New Blues", and CD2 contains eight previously unreleased session tracks recently discovered in the archives of Parlophone Records in London. The additional unreleased material includes alternate versions of album tracks other than "Laura" and two original blues tracks.The album packaging is as faithful as possible to the original record jacket when it was released by Jubilee Records, and also includes a booklet featuring many rare photos from the era. The booklet also includes new liner notes by jazz arranger/pianist Cy Johnson, who collaborated with Mingus in the 1970s and helped arrange "Let My Children Hear Music" in 1972. Even after Mingus's death, his music has continued to be featured by the Mingus Big Band (managed by his widow, Sue Mingus), Kamasi Washington, Chrissie Hynde (whose latest album includes a Mingus cover), Candace Springs, Elvis Costello, Gang Starr ( ), Elvis Costello, Gangster (who sampled Mingus), and Joni Mitchell (who released "Mingus," a tribute to him). This year, the 100th anniversary of his birth and the 65th anniversary of the release of "Mingus Three" will shed new light on the music.
