Alice Coltrane's previously unreleased live recording of her historic February 1971 concert at the legendary Carnegie Hall has finally been officially released. The original multi-track recording was commissioned by Impulse Records but was never released at the time, but it is also a historic recording of Alice's first performance as a leader at Carnegie Hall. The all-star group of musicians that parsonneled into the concert included Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McVeigh, and Ed Blackwell. The concert was a fundraiser for Swami Satchidananda's Integral Yoga Institute, produced by Sid Bernstein, who produced the first The Beatles concert in the US, and also featured Laura Feigey and The Rascals! The concert was also a hot topic at the time as a gala concert. It took place four years after John Coltrane's untimely death and was recorded by Impulse! recorded and eventually released by Impulse! This mesmerizing performance was Alice's first performance as a leader on stage at Carnegie Hall.She had just released her fourth solo album, Journey in Satchidananda, and was deepening her spiritual quest with a five-week trip to India. Alice's (harp and piano) band that evening was a large jazz The ensemble is joined by two members of Satchidananda's circle, Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds, who play harmonium and tambora, respectively, in this mesmerizing jazz ensemble. The band performed two songs from "Journey in Satchidananda" and two songs by John Coltrane. A sign of things to come, the show served as a chronicle of an artist in the midst of his musical and spiritual emergence. Recorded on Quadraphonic, decoded to stereo for this release, and cut/mastered by Kevin Reeves.Includes essays by Lauren du Graff and Alice's producer Ed Michel.
