Description:

Unearthed is a collection of previously unreleased recordings by two of jazz's most legendary musicians, John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy! These rare recordings were made by engineer Rich Alderson in 1961 as part of a test of a new sound system. The tapes were subsequently lost, but have recently been discovered at the New York Public Library, capturing the creative and transformative spirit of the Coltrane/Dolphy combination and the musical achievements of the short-lived quintet in its entirety. Recorded live during Coltrane's month-long residency at the legendary Village Gate in August 1961 with his own quintet, it consists of 90 minutes of previously unreleased material. Dolphy sadly passed away three years later, and this recording is the only live recording of their legendary Village Gate performance. Coltrane's classical quartet was not yet fully established, and that night the Coltrane group had a fifth member in visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. In addition to Coltrane's best-known songs ("My Favorite Things," "Impressions," "Greensleeves"), the album also includes "When Lights Are Low" on Dolphy's bass clarinet and "Africa," a Coltrane composition, on which bassist This is the only non-studio recording by bassist Art Davis. This recording was inspired by a special moment in John Coltrane's journey: the summer of 1961, when his signature ecstatic live sound, shared with his classical quartet of '62-'65, was beginning to mature, and by the African sources he knew so well, It represents a time when he was experimenting with two-bass ideas both in the studio (Ole) and on stage. This rare recording of "Africa" captures his vast vision of the time. This work showcases the poignant and brief relationship between John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. Coltrane first met Dolphy in Los Angeles, and they became friends again after Dolphy moved to New York in 1959.Both were born at the height of bebop, and both had a deep interest in harmony and emotional expression, employing vocal-like effects and a wide emotional range in their playing. The combination of their distinctive sounds - Coltrane's dark, slurred phrasing and Dolphy's bright, sharp voice - is a unique and exciting feature of this historic performance at the Village Gate. The release is accompanied by essays by two of the participants in the evening at the Village Gate, bassist Reggie Workman and recording engineer Rich Alderson. In addition, historian Ashley Kahn and jazz greats Branford Marsalis and Lakeshia Benjamin contribute valuable essays on the recordings.
