Description:
For teenagers Althea and Donna, the ultimate "one-hit wonders," Uptown Top Ranking was a surprise international No. 1 smash hit single. Enchanted by Trinity's hit song "Three Piece Suit," they wrote an answer song called "Uptown Top Ranking" for Joe Gibbs. The success of this single earned them a contract with Virgin Records' Front Line imprint, which released their only album, Uptown Top Ranking, in 1978. The album featured an elite group of Jamaican reggae musicians.' The Riddim Twins' (Sly & Robbie) gave the music a fat rhythm, backed by The Revolutionaries (horn section: Tommy McCook Vin Gordon Herman Marquis, guitar: Earl "Chinna" Smith, keyboards: Bernard Harvey on keyboards).The title track, Uptown Top Ranking, was covered several times in the late '90s by Bristol trip-hoppers Portishead. This reissue includes two bonus tracks, It Mek, an outtake from the then unreleased album, and Going To Negril, a 12" single also from 1978. Remastered on heavyweight black vinyl by Abbey Road. A true reggae classic that has been out of print for many years!
