Simon Nering, a virtuoso who became the only Polish finalist and Audience Prize winner at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, and the first Polish winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in 2017. Nering’s new recording on a Steinway features an intriguing program that explores the genius’s experiments and creative process, ranging from Chopin’s masterpieces to early variations and rare miniatures. This album focuses on the evolution of Chopin’s compositional techniques and his experimental endeavors. It features rare teenage studies such as “In Memory of Paganini (Variations on a Theme from the Carnival in Venice)” and “Variations on a Theme by a Swiss Boy,” in which he sought his own unique musical language while drawing inspiration from Paganini’s virtuosic techniques, as well as short pieces unpublished during his lifetime, such as “Contredanse” and “Cantabile,” offering a glimpse behind the scenes of the genius Chopin’s creative process. Furthermore, in addition to major works that have become synonymous with him—such as the “Etudes (Nos. 3, 17, 18, and 22)” and the “Scherzo No. 4”—the album also includes the unique and rarely performed “Boléro,” which garnered significant attention when it was performed at his January 2026 recital in Japan.
