The string quartets of Debussy and Ravel were composed within a decade of each other, around 1900. Ravel was enlightened by the works of his predecessor Debussy, while Debussy was enlightened by those of Franck and Grieg. The string quartet was a difficult genre in this period, and composers rarely tackled it before reaching maturity, but Ravel, then only 27 years old, took up the challenge, and the "Quartet Allodot," which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2023, is a masterpiece of its kind, These two Belle Époque masterpieces are at the center of the album, with "Al-Asr" by the young French composer Banjaman Athayel in between them. Quartet Arod premiered "Al-Asr" in 2017, a substantial work that draws poetic inspiration from Muslim afternoon prayers and the intense heat between noon and sunset.
