Ryan is backed by guitarist Dylan Day (Jenny Lewis, Laura Veers) on "CALICO," which was recorded primarily at the historic Valentine Recording Studio and Rick Rubin-owned Shangri-La Studios in Los Angeles, Drummer Matt Chamberlain (Lord, Brandi Carlisle), and saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Sam Gendell. Additional production and instrumentation is provided by string arranger Rob Moose (FKA Twigs, Laura Marling) and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The process of making the album felt to me like an exploration of purity and something very honest," Ryan said of the album, adding that the album "has the delicate avant-folk of Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" and the thoroughly spare folk-rock of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska". The free-spirited generosity of "Hunter" runs throughout the album. The lyrical concreteness and overwhelming frankness coexist in Ryan's compositions. This frankness takes the form of a wide variety of lyrics, which are expressed through his rough, soft, and emotional vocals. The album's opening track, the sublimely wistful "Ribbons," with its delicate piano at its core, is a warm, plaintive arrangement of lush strings, soaring synths, and a dazzling steel guitar (this one by Justin Vernon). It's a beautiful piece to showcase the warm and majestic sound of "CALICO". In fact, Ryan himself said of the song, "What I like about 'Ribbons' is that the music speaks for itself. Looking back on the making of CALICO, Ryan likens the experience to "watching a deep wound slowly heal and being patient enough not to reopen it.And by embracing a deliberately slow pace and an often contemplative process, he has acquired a kind of confidence and conviction that leaves a profound impression on artist and audience alike. The result is a miraculous piece of work in which being candid with himself has led to a timeless sound. (2/2)
